Sri Lanka Public Holidays 2026: A Complete Guide for Employers & Payroll Teams

Sri Lanka public holidays and payroll rates explained clearly for businesses, employers and HR teams
Understanding public holidays in Sri Lanka can be confusing — especially when it comes to payroll calculations, statutory entitlements, and Poya day payments.
In 2026, Sri Lanka observes a combination of:
Statutory (Mercantile) Holidays
Full Moon Poya Days
Other Public & Bank Holidays
For employers operating under the Shop and Office Employees Act (SOEA), it’s important to correctly classify these holidays to ensure accurate payroll processing and legal compliance.
This guide breaks down the 2026 holiday calendar clearly and practically.
1. Statutory (Mercantile) Holidays – 2× Pay if Worked
Under the SOEA, the following eight holidays are classified as statutory mercantile holidays.
If an employee is required to work on these days, the employer must either:
Pay no less than twice (2×) the daily wage, or
Grant an alternative holiday before 31 December of the same year

If an employee works on a Poya day, they must be paid no less than 1.5 times the daily wage.

Special Case: 1 May 2026 (Vesak + May Day)
In 2026, May 1 falls on both Vesak Full Moon Poya Day and May Day.
In such cases:
The higher benefit applies
Employers should apply the 2× statutory rate
Multipliers should not be stacked
This is a common payroll error when systems are not configured correctly.
Why Proper Classification Matters
Incorrect holiday classification can result in:
Payroll miscalculations
Compliance risks
Employee disputes
Overpayments or underpayments
For companies managing shift workers, time attendance systems, or automated payroll, it is essential to tag holidays correctly as:
Statutory (2×)
Poya (1.5×)
Public (Policy-based)
